RBI Launches Mobile Aided Note Identifier (MANI) App for the Visually Impaired
On January 1, 2020, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) launched a mobile application called Mobile Aided Note Identifier (MANI) to assist visually impaired individuals in identifying the denominations of Indian currency notes. The app is available for download on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Features of Indian Banknotes for the Visually Impaired:
Indian currency notes incorporate several features to aid visually impaired individuals, such as:
- Intaglio printing and tactile marks.
- Variable note sizes and colors.
- Large numerals and monochromatic patterns.
Despite these features, technological advancements have paved the way for improved accessibility, making daily transactions easier for visually impaired individuals.
Introduction of Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series Notes:
In November 2016, the RBI introduced the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series banknotes with updated designs and sizes. This series includes denominations of ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200, ₹500, and ₹2000. The RBI has continuously prioritized addressing the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals in handling currency notes.
Key Features of the MANI App:
- Denomination Identification:
- Identifies both the Mahatma Gandhi Series and Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series notes.
- Works on the front or reverse side of notes, including half-folded notes, under various lighting conditions (normal light, daylight, or low light).
- Audio and Vibration Alerts:
- Provides denomination details through audio notifications in Hindi and English.
- Offers a vibration mode for those with both visual and hearing impairments.
- Offline Functionality:
- The app works without an internet connection after installation.
- Voice Navigation:
- Supports voice-enabled controls for navigation, provided the device and operating system support this feature.
- Non-Authentication of Notes:
- The app is designed only to identify denominations and does not verify the authenticity of the notes as genuine or counterfeit.
With the launch of the MANI app, the RBI reaffirms its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for visually impaired individuals, making daily financial transactions more convenient.
